Munira offers a broad perspective on healthy eating that is shaped by her experiences of growing up in India and having practiced as a dietitian in India and Bangladesh before arriving in Canada. As an immigrant, Munira understands the importance of providing personalized dietary recommendations that fit well within her client’s personal situation and cultural eating practices. With over five years of experience in community nutrition, Munira has worked with a multicultural and multilingual clientele with diverse medical conditions.
Her interest in the field of nutrition began in her teens while reading the weekly nutrition column in the local newspaper. She pursued a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition from Mount Carmel College (India), following which she completed her Master of Science in Science and Nutrition at SNDT Women’s University (India). Eager to apply knowledge to practice, Munira worked internationally in the fields of chronic disease prevention and management, weight management, sports nutrition and nutrigenomics. Upon immigrating to Canada, Munira was eager to re-qualify for dietetic practice by obtaining her Certificate in Canadian Dietetic Knowledge Competencies at Toronto Metropolitan University. Over the past several years, she expanded her work experience to include children’s nutrition, pregnancy and postnatal nutrition along with building her expertise in chronic disease prevention and management.
Approach to Counselling:
Given her wide experience with clients of different age groups, her approach to counselling involves simplifying scientific jargon into easy-to-follow nutrition guidelines that are personalized to her client’s lifestyle. She believes in working collaboratively with her clients to set meaningful and sustainable health and nutrition goals. Munira sees her relationship with her clients as their “family dietitian,” similar to a family doctor or dentist.
