- Know what truly motivates you and constantly remind yourself of this. Are you losing weight to be able to play with your grandchildren? Keep a picture of them on your fridge or in that place in the pantry that you usually have tempting cookies stored. Keep a pair of jeans you feel your best in, but maybe too tight now, hanging in your kitchen doorway.
- Set action-based goals and rewards. For example, set the goal of bringing your lunch to work every day for one month and, at the end of the month reward yourself with a new fancy lunch container.
- Build a support network. Your dietitian is a key member of this network, but speak up to others who can support you, like co-workers, significant others, children and friends, or online communities.
- Keep it interesting. Instead of eating the same thing day after day, try some new recipes or foods. Always having lettuce-based salads? Try crunchy shredded cabbage or cucumber. Sick of chicken? Try ground turkey or plant-based protein like tempeh.
