Summer is the perfect season to slow down and turn meals into something the whole family looks forward to. Here's how to meal plan and prep with kids in a way that builds healthy habits without adding pressure to your day.
1. Involve Your Kids in Planning and Prepping
Take a trip to a local farm or farmer's market and let your kids explore. Encourage them to pick out one new fruit or vegetable to try, then get creative together finding a recipe that uses it.
2. Create Fun Activities Around Food
- Grow your own food. Pick up seeds for tomatoes, lettuce, or peppers and teach your child to grow a plant together — from planting to sunlight to watering.
- Cook something new with summer produce. Turn fresh strawberries into homemade jam, or whip up a mango black bean salsa for your next picnic. Simple recipes like these turn snack time into a memory.
3. Build a Healthy Cooler Packing List
Pack a cooler with family-friendly options like wraps, fresh fruit, hard-boiled eggs, guacamole, and other easy snacks. It cuts down on food stops and keeps everyone fueled on the go.
4. Make Room for "Other" Food Experiences
There's no such thing as a "good" or "bad" food. Show your kids what that looks like by embracing variety — try the best ice cream or burger spot when you're traveling and turn it into a taste test. Have your kids rank each one on appearance, taste, and feel. When all foods fit into a balanced life, no single meal needs a label.
5. Prep for Easy Meals
Give yourself more time to enjoy the summer by leaning on shortcuts: premade salads, pre-sliced veggies, pre-cooked chicken, bento boxes, or simple snack plates on the slower days.
Top 5 Tips for Summer Family Meals
- Involve kids in meal planning and preparation
- Create fun activities around food
- Pack quick meals and snacks for on the road
- Avoid labeling foods as "good" or "bad"
- Use summer's slower pace to build routines that ease the transition back to school
